A Common Place for Discussion

This blog is intended to allow us all to discuss plans for the rennovation of Mom and Dad's kitchen without Dad having to be on the phone around Mom. It is also intended to allow Cydney and Ken to participate. It is a private blog and cannot be accessed without an invitation from me. You have all been invited because as well as added as contributors so that you can post. You should all receive e-mails when a new post goes up as well as when comments are made. If it is urgent that we read what you posted please send a text to the whole group and mom that reads "BBQ Sauce" and thanks to Dave Steed for that one. I will take care of the story with Mom, we are going to say that it happened at the party at Nat and Dave's that he was randomly saying it. The idea is that she will think it is just a joke when we all know it is that and a signal.

Last, PLEASE DO NOT PUT LINKS FOR THIS ON YOUR BLOGS UNLESS YOU CAN DISGUISE IT SO THAT MOM WON'T NOTICE IT. I will have a link under the "How We Spend our Time" Heading on my blog that says Piano Gallery. If you click on that it will take you to this blog!

Gross, My boogers are black!

I am totally cracking up as I write it, but it is true. I have black rustoleum boogers from spray painting the lazy susan. I wore a mask and everything, but everything coming out is glossy black. GROSS!

Grr, Just Grr!

So after all of that work to be able to be at the house for the reveal, I can't be there. Jim and Dave have to be at the capitol by 9:00 for some hearings, and Kathy has an insurance seminar that starts at 9:00. I will be sitting at my desk at work, so let me know what she thinks. Grr.

Lighting

Daddio. This is the track lighting with no flash on the camera. It has five lights on it and the room is quite dark. We can't do much more too it for the reveal, but you guys will have to address this pretty quick because I think it will make you a little crazy. We will present some options later.
I am also giving you a homework assignment if you can manage it. I know you guys have taken photos of the kitchen before all of this and submitted them to makeover contests, so I would like copies of them so that I can post comparison photos on the other blog so you can see them side by side when you get home. Let me know if you have any please. Thanks.

Kathy Diston and Dave Davis Rule!!

So even though I don't love, love my job; I like the flexibility that it provides! Dave has agreed to let me have tomorrow off so that I can be there all day to get all of the cabinets done since tomorrow is the day they have to be finished so we can have our three day window and load everything back up on Sunday evening. I will be using the 8 "vacation" hours I earned from Labor Day... yep sure is some Labor!! And Kathy changed her eye appointment on Monday morning so that she could be in the office and I can be at home seeing my Momacita cry like a baby!! She says after all of the work we have done, I should be there... so I will be! Yea Me!!

Cabinet Update

GRRR! We hit a bit of a snag. We were stupid and wiped down the poly, because it looked so glossy, but it dried streaked, so we called Joel and got some advice and then I went to the store and spent about a 1/2 hour in conversation with a guy named Sean, who was SO HELPFUL! He gave me all sorts of great advice and I was on my way with the product we should been using all along, a satin finish instead of semi-glossy, because when it comes to polyurithane, semi-glossy is really glossy. I would hate to see what the glossy looks like.

So, I went to the house this afternoon, sanded all of the outsides of the cabinets. Did a test patch in the back of the cabinet hidden by the fridge and sure enough, we had wiped the poly off so much that I was also sanding off the paint. I got ALL of the cabinets sanded and taped off and then reinforcements showed up. We painted another coat of black paint around the entire kitchen, sanded the edges to antique and stained and got another coat of poly on. So basically we started them over tonight with a jump start. We also had doors being worked on and lots going on tonight. It is going to be a nail biter to get the cabinets done because they need 3 days after the last coat of poly before they can withstand regular use and that is after a MINIMUM of 3 coats.

Time will tell I guess!

Thoughts on Reveal

I like your idea. If Rosemarie picks us up, then everyone else who can be there will have the opportunity to be inside. You still ought to park elsewhere of course.

I do wonder about where you should be for the reveal. We will almost certainly come in through the front door. She will see the kitchen from the hall as soon as she gets to the corner, long before you could see her from the dining room. If the doors are open on the family room, she will go straight in there, so have them closed. If you want to get her reaction, you need to be standing in the kitchen so you can see the corner of the hallway.

CABINETS!!!

At 1:00 in the morning on Friday night, Jessica, Rebecca, and Natalie were hard at work down in the kitchen with NSYNC and BSB blasting VERY loudly. I don't know how the Lunt's managed to sleep through it all!!

Jessica's very tired "I'm going to hurt you face".

Now she's really going to hurt us! It's ok, Natalie will protect poor Rebecca!
Taking a break!
Jes sat in a lot of cabinet sand! The end product for the night... Ready for paint tomorrow!

The Next Day..BLACK PAINT!!!

The end product for the day...next Clear Coat and Antiquing!!

Backsplash

So we are cleaning off the backsplash so that we can paint it, and we are finding that the wallpaper is peeling off at the seams. you can see the stuff underneath it. We are just wondering if you want us to paint over the wallpaper even though its coming off, or if you want us to peel it off.. or what you think it best.

Dining Room Mostly Complete

Here are a few shots before...during the cleaning/prep...

During the painting...

Break for Lunch...

All Done!!

The pretty walls in the dining room are all done. Justs a couple of spots to touch up at the very end!!

Antique look

I found this picture, it shows the look a little better.

Paint for Cabinets

Dad, What kind of paint should we use for the cabinets and do you think they should be primed, or just painted?

OK, since I don't have rights to customize, here is the schedule for the reveal:

Our plane lands at 7:45 am the morning of the 13th. We have not yet arranged to have someone pick us up, so that will take care of someone being there for the reveal. I suggest whoever it is, go straight into the house on some pretense when we get there and I will help mom with the luggage.

Everyone else that can be there, should park on an adjacent street.

I do not have to go to the office, so somewhere between 8:45 - 9:00 we will most likely be home.

here are the pictures

Once again, pictures of the lights in my kitchen, but the point of me putting this on here is to show you that you can put the little "box" where the power goes anywhere on the track light.

Angela's Cabinets

First of all, they aren't the best pictures, but hopefully you can at least get a little idea of what we are talking about. They were eating dinner and I really had to go to the bathroom and die on my couch...UTI...uggghh!!!!!

They look so much better in person, I wish you could see them.

Curtains

Okay... Mom has already said that she really likes the curtains that Jessica and I both have in our houses. This First picture is in my living room. The very curtain Mom wants. They are from Bed Bath and Beyond.

The next pictures are from Lowe's, where they have very similar curtains for a heckuva lot cheaper. There is a full view and a closer view at the top, which is the difference from the BB&B ones. I think I actually prefer the Lowe's ones. They are cute.

And they have valances that match... which since we don't know exactly what she wants in the kitchen window, this is a cheap, cute option. If she doesn't like it, it's back in the package and she can pick what she wants or pick fabric she likes and have the amazing Grandma Pat make her a Roman Shade.

Let me know!

Ceiling Fan from Home Depot

This is the ceiling fan at the Home Depot that we lean toward. It is the very same one that I have in my family room and these are pictures of it. One lit up and one with the lights off. You be the judge.
